2.5-Day Intro to GIS Course (2023)

This 2.5-day course will introduce you to the basics of using ArcPro and ArcGIS Online. Together, these two platforms are used to create, view, and edit data, and to create web maps for sharing with others in your organization or publicly.
 

A textbook will be provided along with data and tutorials that we will work through as a class. The textbook will be yours to keep after the class as a desktop reference. An optional third morning (9am - noon), included in the cost of the workshop, will be available for workshop attendees to bring company datasets to work on with the instructor or to complete additional textbook exercises with help from the instructor. Below is the course outline, which may change based on what the class most wants to learn.
 

Course Outline

Day 1

  • Overview of ArcPro 
  • Navigating ArcPro
  • Working with Attribute Data
  • Labeling Features and Configuring Pop-Ups
  • Filtering Data with Definition Queries
  • Symbolizing Datasets using Quantitative Attributes
  • Setting Visibility Ranges of Datasets
  • Processing Raster Datasets


Day 2

  • Importing Data into a new ArcPro Project
  • Modifying Attribute Tables 
  • Aggregating Data with Spatial Joins
  • Working with Shapefiles, KML, and X,Y Data Points 
  • Editing Polygon Features
  • Creating and Deleting Polygon Features
  • Sharing Maps and Data in ArcGIS Online
  • Creating data in ArcGIS Online
  • Using data between ArcGIS Online and ArcPro


Day 3 (Optional)

  • Bring your own datasets to work on with instructor
  • Work with the instructor on data best practices for your company
  • Continue working on additional textbook exercises

Computer Requirements

You must bring a laptop and mouse to this course. 


This course comes with a free 6-month trial version of ArcPro and ArcGIS Online.  Prior to the course, you will receive instructions on how to install ArcPro on your laptop and download the course datsets.


This link describes the minimum computing requirements necessary to run ArcPro 3.1.  It should run on most laptop platforms including Microsoft Surface.
